On MSI’s Chinese site, we have a little surprise concerning the RTX 5080. Apparently, in the list of GPUs compatible with the MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi, an RTX 5080 24GB is listed. A mistake that can also be seen on a promo image of a Vanguard version of the brand. Could this be a new card in the pipeline, or a slightly absent-minded employee?
RTX 5080 24GB: a new version in the works?
Of course, this is just a rumour, as so far this is the only lead on such a card. As you can see, this model does appear on MSI’s Chinese site, in the GPU compatible section of the X870 Tomahawk WiFi. What’s more, we also find this mention on a visual of a 5080 Vanguard.
However, if such a card existed, or was in the pipeline, it wouldn’t be complicated. The current card uses 16 Gb memory chips on a 256-bit memory bus. So switching to 24 Gb chips would make it easy to achieve such a capacity. This is what is done on the RTX 5090 mobile, which uses this type of chip. The other advantage would be to keep the GPU as it is today.
The question now is what such a card would be called: RTX 5080 Super, RTX 5080 Ti? It’s hard to say, but in any case, it wouldn’t be very coherent since the Ti and Super versions benefit from an improved GPU with more cuda core. Logically, this would mean upgrading to a higher chip, since the current card makes the most of its GPU: the GB203.
But it remains to be seen just how serious all this is, and whether we’re free from typos and misinterpretations when writing web pages and photo montages. In short, you know the drill: take this with a pinch of salt and keep an eye on it.
