The words “GTA 6 on the Switch 2” almost sound like a meme, but in 2025, it’s suddenly a real talking point. While Rockstar’s next blockbuster is officially set for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 26, 2026, whispers suggest that Nintendo’s upcoming console could also get a taste of Vice City.
But could it really happen?
Rumors and Hints
The latest wave of chatter started when content creator Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly claimed that Nintendo and Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, are already in discussions about bringing Grand Theft Auto VI to the Switch 2. He went as far as to “guarantee” that Nintendo will be pushing hard for the deal behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently emphasized the publisher’s commitment to supporting the Switch platform. It’s worth noting that big strategy titles like Civilization VII are already headed there.
The Case for GTA 6 on Switch 2
Nintendo is no longer just for kids. Take-Two acknowledged that the Switch audience today spans all demographics. GTA as a franchise is about as “adult” as it gets, and the Switch 2 could be powerful enough to handle it.
Rockstar has tested Nintendo waters before. Remember L.A. Noire on the original Switch? It wasn’t perfect, but it proved Rockstar isn’t afraid to experiment with Nintendo hardware.
Of course, there are serious hurdles:
- Hardware limitations. Even with rumored performance upgrades, the Switch 2 is unlikely to match PS5 or Xbox Series X/S horsepower. A cloud-based or heavily optimized version might be the only way forward.
- Development timelines. GTA 6 will already push Rockstar’s resources to the limit. A Switch 2 port could take years, meaning it might not appear until 2027 or later — if at all.
- Rockstar’s habits. The studio historically prioritizes PlayStation, Xbox, and (eventually) PC. Nintendo ports are rare exceptions, not the norm.
My Take
Would I love to play GTA 6 on a handheld? Absolutely. The idea of dropping into Vice City during a train ride makes me want to ride a train. But if I’m being realistic, I don’t think we’ll see a Switch 2 port anywhere near launch. If it happens at all, it’ll likely be a late, scaled-down version, similar to how PC players often wait a year for Rockstar’s ports. And on that, if the time frame is similar, I’d be leaning towards the Steam Deck for my on-the-go crime spree.
Still, the fact that this rumor even has traction says a lot about how far Nintendo has come. A decade ago, the thought of a mainline GTA on a Nintendo platform would have been laughable.
